I have to start by saying that for the most part, I've been pretty happy here and I feel that I've adjusted well to our new life here. For example, I've stop wearing my jammie pants out when I run my errands. I've discovered that (here) people would rather wear a pair of holey jeans before they wore their pj's outside. (Shrug) To each their own, I guess.
So while it's all well and good down here, I still have to remember that I AM in a place that may have a more conservative world view than Northern VA. I'm driving yesterday and my travels take me past a local high school. As I'm passing by the (public) school, I'm HORRIFIED to see that there is a Pro-life, Anti-abortion demonstration happening RIGHT at the entrances to the parking lot of the school. Really?! What is this nonsense? While, I can appreciate that the thing appeared to be a peaceful demonstration, just your older people holding signs (no shouting from what I heard). But did you seriously need to make your statement on the same side of the street, RIGHT at the driving entrances? It's true that my kids don't attend this particular school, but I have to say that I didn't leave Northern VA to have people preaching at my kids the moment they leave the school. Isn't there a law or something that says during school hours you have to set up camp x-feet away from a school? Can I see a show of hands that remember the smokers getting in trouble for smoking on the same side of the street as the high school? Ugh...It's just irritating. I just want it understood that while my views may or not be different from these demonstraters...what I disagree with is the fact that they were THAT close to a place that's supposed to be a "safe" place for our children. Why couldn't they have been on the other side the street to make their statment?
Sigh...
