Does Facebook a friend make?

I've noticed that these days EVERYthing is on Facebook, Myspace, and Twitter. But recently I've started to question my own obsession with networking sites. I mean what is it about someone "liking" our status updates, tweets, posts and pictures that validates our existence? But does anyone actually care that I just stubbed my toe crossing my living room? Does it hurt less when 5 people or more like or comment on my status in a certain amount of time? When did my facebook page become a chain letter?

Are we only friends if Facebook say so? How did I manage to navigate the jungle of adolescent social interaction before networking sites? Oh wait, I did this crazy thing called...talking. I fear that I may have lived my life in a fantasy world where my relationships were based on something more substantial than a "poke".

And along with those same lines, what determines the end of (any) relationship? In MY day, words would do the trick. A (not so simple) "You're awesome, but I'm just super busy right now..." would be sufficient. But these days Facebook is the answer. The best way (I've recently discovered) to either a) get someone's attention, or b) give an unwanted person the friendly boot, is to UNFRIEND them. That apparently is the ULTIMATE diss now-a-days.

10 Things that (networking sites) taught me

10. My feelings only matter when someone "likes" them.

9.  A true friend will "follow" you.

8.  I need to feel sorry for any one that has fewer "friends" than I do.

7.  A relationship is only meaningful when facebook deems it so.

6.  Everyone needs to know about the "Guy that cut me off while talking on his cellphone...JERK! #JERKSWHOCAN'TDRIVE" (send)

5.  If I un-tag myself (from pictures) I was really there.

4.  Reaching Level 60 on Farmville isn't sad...it's COOL!

3. I must take time to check, double-check, and TRIPLE check my page for comments (Facebook etiquette dictates that comments only count when made within a certain window).

2. It's not considered stalking if I only check your page fewer times than I check my own...15 times a day...

and...

1.  Everyone needs to be constantly updated about my bodily functions and aliments...as well as my plan of attack for my yeast infections  (Thank you CRAZY...Good to know)

  1. As useful and entertaining as FB and Twitter can be... I kinda wish everyone would just get tired of it and stop using it so we can go back to the days before we had statuses and tweets.
But yeah, you're totally right. The ultimate diss these days is unfriending and blocking, and since that's the way people communicate these days.. its effective for kicking someone out of you life. Sad state of affairs we have fallen into. And I've done it... you should see my block list... sigh...
